The People’s Republic of China is the third largest country in the world in terms of area and the largest in terms of population. Its total area is 9.6 million square kilometers and its population is 1.2 billion.

China has shared borders for centuries with Korea, the former Soviet Union, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Burma, Laos and Vietnam.

China contains 31 provincial-level divisions grouped by its former administrative areas from 1949 to 1952, which are now known as traditional regions.

Climate: Great differences in climate are found from region to region owing to China's extensive territory and complex topography. The temperature in China in the winter is 5 to 18 degree centigrade lower than that in other countries on the same latitude in winter. Monsoon blows into China from the ocean in summer, bringing with them warm and wet currents, thus rain. Annual precipitation also varies greatly from region to region; it is as high as 1,500 millimeters along the southeastern coast. Language: “Chinese” or the “Sinitic language” can be considered a language family and is originally the indigenous language spoken by the Han Chinese in China. The standardized form of spoken Chinese is Standard Mandarin.
